Amable Martinez, Head Women's Volleyball Coach

Saint Peter's University Interim Director of Athletics, David Bryngil, has announced the hiring of Amable Martinez as the head women’s volleyball coach. Martinez becomes the ninth coach in the program’s 33-year history.

Martinez joins Saint Peter’s after most recently serving as the men's volleyball head assistant coach at Stevens Institute of Technology during the spring of 2017. There, he helped guide the No. 3 nationally ranked Ducks into the Division III NCAA tournament national semifinal round before falling to the eventual national champions, Springfield College. Under the assistance of Martinez, the team finished the season with a 27-5 record. As the Men's team coach at Stevens, the team reached the National championship in April 2018 and finished National Runner-up.

Prior to his stint at Stevens Institute of Technology, Martinez served as the head coach of the Bloomfield College women’s volleyball team for six seasons. At Bloomfield, he comprised a win total of 69 matches, including 20 or more wins in his final two seasons, and a .500 or better record in his final three seasons. In 2015, Martinez led the program to a 24-6 overall record, which was the most wins in program history since joining the NCAA Division II level, and led the Bears to a CACC regular season championship with a 15-4 conference mark, guiding the team to an appearance in the CACC Tournament finals. In the fall of 2016, he recorded his second consecutive 20-win season, as Bloomfield finished the season with 21 wins and its third straight trip to the postseason.

Prior to coaching in the collegiate ranks, Martinez was the head girls’ volleyball coach at Science Park High School in Newark, NJ from 2005-2011. He became a decorated coach at the high school level, raising the program to unprecedented heights during his tenure as he led the school to back-to-back CHC championships in 2007 and 2008, and to the first Essex County Tournament Final in school history in 2009. Martinez continued to build the program over his final two years at Science Park, leading the club to the Group One State semifinals in 2010 and the Group One State finals in 2011, capturing the Group One State South Sectional championship in the same season. The program's tremendous ascension into the state's elite earned Martinez head coaching duties for the New Jersey State Senior All-Star Game for three consecutive seasons, from 2009 until 2011. Martinez was also a winner of three-straight Essex County Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year awards from 2007-2009 and he was a two-time Colonial Hills Conference Coach of the Year.

At the club level, Martinez founded the Lady Chargers Volleyball Academy in 2009, and currently acts as Club Director for the organization. Serving as an assistant coach from 2005-2008, Martinez helped guide the Newark 15U Girls Volleyball team to one gold and two silver medals at the U.S. Youth Games during his time with the club. Also, serving as head coach of the National Hudson Lady Warriors club from 2007-2008, Martinez led the club to a 63-28 mark over two seasons.

A 2002 graduate of Kean University with a degree in psychology, Martinez starred as a member of the Cougars baseball team from 1996-1998 and spent a season as a student-assistant coach for the volleyball program in 2002. He continued his education at Saint Peter's University, where he earned an Alternate Route Teaching Certificate in 2006, and a MA in education, administration and supervision from the University in 2012. A Certified Personal Trainer, Martinez is also Coaching Fundamentals certified by the American Sport Education Program and he also holds IMPACT and CAP I certifications by USA Volleyball.
